TRICARE Explained: Finding the Right Coverage for Your Family

Transitioning out of active duty or reaching retirement age brings many changes, and understanding your healthcare shouldn’t be a source of stress. TRICARE is a powerful benefit, but with various plans like Prime, Select, and For Life, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed.

What Veterans Need to Know Now
The most important thing to remember is that your TRICARE options depend on your military status (Retiree, Reserve, or Medically Retired) and your age.
TRICARE Prime vs. Select: Prime generally has lower out-of-pocket costs but requires you to use Military Treatment Facilities or assigned primary care managers. Select offers more flexibility in choosing your own doctors but involves higher cost-sharing.
TRICARE For Life (TFL): For those 65 and older, TFL acts as secondary coverage to Medicare. This is a massive benefit that helps cover many of the "gaps" Medicare leaves behind, often resulting in very low out-of-pocket medical expenses.
Why Planning Matters
Healthcare needs change as we age. Whether you are managing a service-connected disability or simply looking for the best preventative care for your spouse and children, choosing the right "flavor" of TRICARE ensures you aren't paying for more than you need—or getting less than you deserve.
