Guarding Your Benefits: How to Spot Scams Targeting Veterans

  • Apr 17

You’ve earned your benefits through sacrifice and service. Unfortunately, that makes veterans a frequent target for "pension poachers" and scammers. Protecting your financial health is just as important as protecting your physical health.

Red Flags to Watch For...

Scammers often use high-pressure tactics or pretend to be from the VA or a known veteran organization. Be wary of:

  • Charging for "Free" Forms: Never pay someone to help you file an initial claim for VA benefits. Accredited agents and VSOs provide this help for free.

  • Investment "Requirements": If someone tells you that you must move your assets into a specific investment to qualify for a VA pension, proceed with extreme caution.

  • The "Secret" Benefit: If an offer sounds too good to be true—like a "secret" government program that guarantees a massive payout—it almost certainly is.

Take Control...

The best defense is a good offense. Stay informed, keep your personal information private, and always verify the credentials of anyone offering financial or insurance advice. Your security is our priority, and we are here to help you vet the information you receive.
